Track: “Lucky U Stayed” by Kilimanjaro

May 20, 2012 in Music, Tracks

For almost two years now, the Swedish post dubstep duo of Aron Jensen and Patrick Alexander Bech-Madsen have been cranking out jams together as Kilimanjaro. What I really like about them is that Kilimanjaro found a way to successfully mix live instruments with electronically synthesized tones. This kind of future garage, ambient 2 step is exactly where I think a lot of bands are going to be heading in future times. Bedroom pop is on the rise and these young artists at the forefront of the movement have to capitalize while they can and are still relevant. What’s funny about it is that the track featured below, which is off of the free compilation album Polaron Selections #1 is titled “Lucky U Stayed”. I feel like this is directed towards the fan base and maybe their devout supporters. If so, count me in. & To answer your question, Kilimanjaro: “Yes. Yes, I am lucky.” Stay tuned for future updates/coverage of these two. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Track: “Canadian Myst” by deadCAT

May 20, 2012 in In The Neighborhood, Local Albums, Local Tracks, Music, Tracks

deadCAT is the recording project of  Britt Teusink and Gage Gilmore, from Atlanta. They caught my attention with December’s “Eat Some” LP, which is still a free download on their Bandcamp page.  It’s hard to fit their sound neatly into a genre. There’s a strong streak of psych/indie rock/shoegaze. It reminds me  of  some early Deerhunter.  Their latest is a free release on the Madrid-based start-up label Young Latitudes, “weareinaCULT”.  The four track EP shows growth in the duo’s songwriting and vocals.  “Canadian Myst” is the standout, a very catchy dub-infected number that will have you hitting replay. Definitely legit. Listen / download “Canadian Myst” below, grab the EP here.

Video: “When I See You Again” by Canyons

May 20, 2012 in Music, Music Videos, Tracks

I don’t even know what to say. This is a video and it’s too short for my liking. But somehow, I’m breaking my own rules and throwing this in the Single of the Year bucket with no other videos. I feel bad for saying this, but I know this wouldn’t win in Hanus’ Video of the Year category when 2012 comes to a close, but I like it so much that I’m tossing it in our SOTY one. (Even though, technically this is a re-release from their 2011 album titled: Keep Your Dreams) The singular track from Canyons March drop of When I See You Again is too lush and inviting to ignore. These two Aussie artisans ( Ryan Grieve and Leo Thomson) just now got on my radar and I’m thoroughly impressed (obviously) by their style. And to top off the tall glass of pure win I felt like I just drank, their apparently signed to the heavyweight Modular People record label & DFA Records. What the?…. “When I See You Again” is the track you throw on a mixtape for your girlfriend just to have som positive vibes flowing through her car stereo. It’s the one you play over and over in your house while you do that much needed Sunday deep clean. Canyons blends sensible pop with fluid indie psych. I mean honestly, if this was for an upcoming or sophomore album…you can guess what I would say. Actually, I might be speechless. Either way, definitely give Canyons and look and keep up with us for future coverage of their work. I’m sorry I couldn’t post their gnarly debut album when it had dropped, but we weren’t operable in 2011. I owe you one, Hanus reader. Read the rest of this entry →

Album: “Islands” by Adam Smith

May 19, 2012 in Albums, Music

More and more, we’re seeing artists and producers come to us with a kind of “genuine in existence” vibe. This one, obviously named Adam Smith, is able to grace the pages of Hanus with his most recent effort of Islands all the way from London. I’m really digging on the authenticity presented within this piece. I can respect someone, or a collective that is able to say “Hey, we are what we are.” I feel like that was the intention whilst choosing to forego a handle. (I would assume lack of creativity in some cases, but not this one! Do you hear that music? Islands is definitely a noteworthy debut and I loved how saturated it was with teetering energy. Maybe the most awesome thing about that is the energy felt within it. It’s not quite the most relaxing audio in the world, but it’s not quite the most energetic either. Somewhere in the middle of reading a book and getting amped up for a special occasion, you find Islands. Kind of fitting, isn’t it?

Video: “TOMB” by 32 ZØØM

May 18, 2012 in Music, Music Videos

This track is why I love what I do. The super energetic, hype anthem from Machina Muetre’s camp is what the style of TRVP (trap) hip hop music is about. Loud, obnoxious, full of funky ass basslines and indignant. “TOMB” is the kind of song you play on a Friday night while you concur city streets with the intentions of reeking havoc and being incredibly raucous with the company you happen to be with. I’m not exactly sure why they chose the handle of 32 ZØØM to perform this track, but that doesn’t change the main ingredients. Some of you might possibly remember one of the times we covered Isaiah Toothtaker or when we discussed Machina Meurte, but both Mestizo and Rapewolf were pivotal members within that union. If Isaiah was in this song it would just be too wild and would automatically win my favor for Track of The Year….sadly, this is only a badass track for May. Either way, stay tuned for more coverage from us on these dudes and don’t sleep on them. Also, peep the free download you can get with Isaiah and Rapewolf right here. Read the rest of this entry →
